Strength and conditioning is no longer just a case of lifting weight and running.  Conditioning in its simplest terms means preparing the components of physical fitness for a particular goal.  It's important for trainer and althete to undestand the effects that a particular workout will have on the body.  Knowing the purpose and benefits of your workout will make it more likely to succeed.  The factors influencing the choice and types exercise are endless.  Training needs to be specific.  Specificity is essential in achieving the best results...whatever the required results may be. Strength, endurance, speed, power.  Timescale is also essential.  Over training and undertraining are common and need to monitored.  Periodisation is a method of preparing a sports person (individual or team) for peak performance at just the right time.
